Absolutely Flippin Marvellous,
This review is from: House Of Flying Daggers [DVD] (DVD)
This is one of the very few films I've ever seen that deserves five stars. The storyline is a little recycled but just as you think you've got it figured, the story twists, things happen that you werent expecting and other things that you were expecting suddenly don't. I won't give it away, but there is a nice twist at the end which is a little different to the male masculinity you would usually expect.
The places chosen to shot the film are quite simply breath taking, with every colour nature has to offer from deep greens and reds to stark white landscapes being captured on camera by director Zhang Yimou. The sets that were actually created for the film have also been done fantastically, all reflecting the traditional Chinese buildings and decorations that you would expect to see and incorporating even more bright colours.
All three of the main actresses / actors (Ziyi Zhang, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Andy Lau) play there roles fantastically and with great conviction. Ziyi Zhang stands out slightly more then the other's, playing the blinded character Mei andmoving with such conviction you could be forgiven for thinking Ziyi Zhang herself was actually blind.
And of coarse, I haven't even mentioned the fantastic, period music and sound effects that appear throughout the film, or the brilliant martial arts performed by all. I haven't even got to the great special effects, with the camera riding behind or on the back of arrows and knives as they fly through the air. I could go on for hours.
If you want to see a film you'll never forget, buy this and watch it on a wide screen with surround sound (get yourself invited around a friends house if you don't have the necessary equipment). Sit back, and enjoy a true masterpiece.
