This review is from: Marley & Me [DVD] (DVD)
This movie is VERY overrated. I have no idea why do many people love it so much and cry at it.
Let me say first that I AM a dog lover. I adore dogs; especially the naughty, playful ones. I cry at dog movies; you won't believe how many buckets I wept at Lassie and White Fang (white fang wasn't even that sad! yet I still cried loads.)
I'm a very emotional person when it comes to movies. and animals. especially movies about animals.
But Marley and Me was a HUGE letdown. The beginning was adorable; i even laughed out loud at the training scenes and whatnot.
but... as the movie went on I got bored. REALLY bored. The thing is, this had SO much potiential to be heartbreaking for me, but the movie focused way too much on the everyday life of the couple, and not enough on the dog. At one point i had completely forgotten they even HAD a dog; which is ridiculous since the movie is called 'Marley and Me', not 'Me and my wife and our lives and my promotions and my daily job and my kids and oh guess what i also have a dog'.
Also, the movie is rated PG! so stop showing them trying to have kids! i watched this with my family and my 8 year old sister was also present, so we had to fast forward a lot of the making out. there was so much of it! and all the sexual references too... seriously, was all that really necessary? I mean it's a family film; it's enough to say that they wanted kids and indicate that they were trying for one, but they really didn't need to show so much of the evidence.
But all in all, my main complaint is that the movie didn't make me fall in love with the characters and the dog enough to cry, or even be bothered about what happened to them. The plot was empty and boring and didn't help develop relationships between characters or anything at all. The idea of a dog kind of dissapeared from the plot after a while, which is very disappointing. It doesn't take a lot for me to get attached to character or drawn into a story, but my god, Marley and Me didn't make me feel anything AT ALL.
Yes, I'm a dog lover. Yes, I'm emotional when it comes to movies.
In fact, I'm a girl that sometimes even cries at tv adverts; when i say that i didn't cry at (and in fact, hated) this movie then there must at least be SOMETHING wrong with it.
