This review is from: We Can Remember It For You Wholesale (Collected Short Stories of Philip K. Dick) (Paperback)
Whilst watching the recent compelling adaptation of Lehane's 'Shutter Island', I was struck with a profound sense of deja vu. After some contemplation, I was drawn back to 'Retreat Syndrome'a brilliant study of what constitutes reality - an enduring Dick theme. This redolence led me to reflect upon how much of Dick's ideas have consciously or subliminally informed not just contemporary literature but other forms of popular culture also.
This, the last in a series of anthologies of his short fiction, is a fine example of one of the most original and eclectic minds in Science Fiction. Our perceptions of reality are further challenged in 'The Electric Ant 'whilst 'Little Black Box' affords Dick officianados with an insight into the evolution of his classic novella 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'
The theme of time is explored as only Dick can in 'Your Appointment Will Be Yesterday', with history literally unwriting itself and in the haunting and claustrophobic 'I Hope I Shall Arrive Soon.' The range of his work is well represented in this collection and no better demonstrated by the contoversial and powerful 'The Pre-Persons' which is likely to make even the most ardent supporters of free choice with respect to abortion to review their beliefs.
