This review is from: Primer [DVD] (DVD)
I do like getting films that seem to be more indie, with a bit more integrity than Hollywood twaddle.
However, it IS hard to understand. They talk very fast, American and in scientific jargon I understood about 1/4 of. Yes, its very realistic in its conversationalism, but you can only really do this if the subject matter is generally understood.
I found it really hard to follow, which is rare, but even then, thats what Donnie Darko can be like, but I think the main fault is a real lack of emotion and very little relationships. Films like Donnie Darko get by because they affect you not only with their sci fi, oh my god revolutionary way of thinking about science and especially time, but with the humanity.
I didn't detect much real emotion, no love, maybe a small amount of anger, panic, and highly highly dummed down excitement. However, you can't relate to this if you don't understand whats making them do this, because the plot is just not understandable.
If there's no real emotion, it gives the impression they can't act, even if they can, so it fails.
Nice try though.
