The Dogs D'Amour have been around since before I was born - and that's since 1983, for the factophiles among you. Of late, though, lead singer Tyla has been touring with a variety of uber-talented performers under the guise of the Dogs, amongst them Rich Jones (the Loyalties, the Yo-Yo's, Black Halos, Sorry and the Sinatras, Ginger Wildheart Band). Though they always put on a great show, there was that little spark of the old Dogs magic missing.
Not any more.
Cyber Recordings sees Tyla, Bam, Jo Dog and Steve reunite for the worthiest of causes, raising funds for an old friend going through cancer treatment. Now, let's be honest - Tyla and the gang probably knew they could knock anything together and the die-hard fans would lap it up, but to their credit the four tracks on this CD are easily up there with the best. From the very first moment Tyla's gravelly, whiskey-soaked voice kicks in on top of those sweetly familiar refrains of the old Dogs sound on Flame Boy, you know you're in for a treat. Sounding like a potent lovechild of Tom Waits and the Wildhearts with a little twist of old style rock 'n'roll thrown in for good measure, the Dogs have rarely failed to delight, and this disc certainly hits the mark.
As an addendum, it's well worth picking up a physical copy merely for the pleasure of having the artwork in your collection, even the lyrics printed inside handwritten by Tyla himself in his distinctive style, and the four portraits of the band members on the inner sleeve are definitely ones to cherish for those who've been on the long journey with them. And for newcomers to the Dogs, pick up this little baby, celebrate it and then dive in headfirst to their gloriously extensive back catologue. Trust me, you won't regret it for even a moment.
