The eagerly awaited album from slide king, Sonny Landreth, this time ably abetted by a number of his musical mates!
Now normally, an album such as this would be a jam in the studios, all attempting to outdo the "host" - not so this album. Indeed, many of the players here hold Mr Landreth in awe and therefore rather than attempting to show off, they are more than comfortable to play their supporting roles to produce an absolutely glorious sound. Indeed, if anything, Mr Landreth succeeds in extracting the very best from each of the musicians involved (and remember we are talking Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler - so no lack of talent here!)
The album kicks off with Blue Tarp Blues with Mark Knopfler acting as foil to a mid-paced, Dire Straits reminiscent, tune and this sets the standard for what is to follow.
"When I Still Had You","Way Past Long" all keeping up the pace with both Robben Ford and Eric Clapton turning in some excellent soloing - and then we hit one of the instrumentals that Sonny occasionally tosses into the mix and on this ("The Milky Way Home") we find Eric Johnson on fire....and if you want to hear guitar heaven, then this is about as close as it gets - beautiful and understated but played with a fantastic hard edged delivery!
Still only one day in my CD player but this album has truly blown me away, I can see little chance of anything else getting a look in over the coming weeks as I take in every little nuance, every inflection of this superb album.
If you've never heard of this guy - you'll be amazed at the sound this man generates. If you're already aware of him, then you don't need to be told. Just BUY!
