Excellent football book from an author whose enthusiasm shines through.,
This review is from: Pirates, Punks & Politics: FC St. Pauli: Falling in Love with a Radical Football Club (Paperback)
As an English fan of FC St Pauli, this was a must read for me, but I expected to be disappointed. I've read so much about the club in the English language that was poorly researched, and simply didn't resonate with nor resemble my experiences of following St Pauli.
I needn't have worried, this is a great book for any football fan, which manages to mix in the politics of the supporters, the history of how they became a Kult club, and general football writing, without ever spending too long in any one particular direction.
Nick intersperses interviews with the people that matter at the club (the fans), and thorough research of the history of the club and it's fans, with his own experiences of matchday, In the wrong hands, this could have gone very wrong, as so much football writing becomes too "personal" for me, "and then i did this, and then this happened, and then we went there", but Nick manages to avoid this. The personal experiences taking on more of a feel of a travelogue, with interesting facts and observations about the places he's visited. It also helps that he's got a great comedic style, and is prone to a good number of mishaps...!
I'd recommend this book to any football fan, particularly English fans who've at some point grown disillusioned with the sanitised English game - there is another way. It might involve "politics", but it's fun. And this book conveys that superbly.
