Cheap and different doesnt mean bad,
This review is from: All Superheroes Must Die [DVD] (DVD)
There are a very large amount of negative reviews around about this film, a large number gripe on about the smallbudget, lack of effects, cast, and general scale.
These reviews are correct in this but they all take these points as huge negatives, almost all making indirect comparisons to all of the superhero blockbusters around today, these points are in fact what makes ASMD a very good film and to compare it to the blockbusters today is to do it an injustice.
Due to the lack of budget and small cast ASMD all focuses around the core characters and the small town they are trapped within, taking you to around 5 locations where various rounds are set up for our heroes to compete in and in theory win.
This leads to some the films action and drama feeling very tight and suspensefull as you are never more than moments away from the next trial the heroes have to face but also it does lead to a lack of narrative almost creating at times a repetitious rinse and repeat scenario leading towards the films conclusion.
Personally I didnt really notice this untill after watching it and during the film it kept me absolutely gripped to the end.
The main part that stands out about ASMD is the characters it centres around, you start off knowing nothing about them and throughout the film various snippets of information and flashbacks give you a basic backstory to their team, or ex team technically, as the film goes on from round to round and the challenges get more severe you start to know and in turn feel for the heroes as you see them put through the wringer and eventually you are left affected by the at times bleak imagery on screen.
This is one area I think would have suffered had they had any more money as it is hard for modern blockbusters to have characters with heart that you actually care about.
In all honesty I was really surprised with this film, it has to be seen to be believed as it genuinely works. Dont expect any effects or flying or powers, just expect a very good character thriller that happens to involve superheroes.
