Money = Happiness?,
This review is from: Arthur [DVD] (DVD)
Arthur (Russell Brand) is heir to a massive fortune & therefore spoilt rotten.He can have anything he wants & lives a life of selfish, infantile eccentricity - nothing is too wacky, obnoxious, or cringe -making. While his mother heads a massively rich business, his every wish (almost) is pandered to by his live-in Nanny (Helen Mirren) & Chauffeur. So in the first half of the film we laugh at his idiocy and mind-boggling, over the top lifestyle. Things get more serious when he gets an ultimatum from his mother: marry this filthy rich heiress (which will double the value of the family business) or - lose your inheritance.(all £999,000,000 of it) Or some such amount.
Problem is, Arthur has fallen for a sincere, hard working, straightforward, poor girl. i.e. all the things he isn't. This is when he meets real life, head on. This is also when the film becomes more serious - with less of his cranky behaviour - and we then realise that what matters most in life is to be, kind, understanding and loving. And so does Arthur. The tenor of the film changes as we watch Arthur becoming - almost - normal, and true love winning the day. The film starts as an idiotic fantasy but by the end is very moving and touching.
