Good, but worth an Oscar?,
This review is from: Ordinary People (DVD)
The key character in this film is the mother, played brilliantly by Mary Tyler Moore. I always thought of her as a comedian, from the days of her 'Mary Tyler Show' on television. But here, she comes across as a serious actor capable of projecting a convincing cold-heartedness in family relationships, including with a son who tried to commit suicide after his brother died in a tragic accident and with a husband who gradually falls out of love with her. Even so, it is hard to understand why this film was so widely acclaimed. The climax was very predictable early on and the other actors, besides Moore, were obviously 'acting' their parts, and were therefore less authentic.
