5.0 out of 5 stars A Rare Rupert Book, 20 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Lots of Fun to Cook with Rupert (Hardcover)
This is an extremely difficult book to find these days and apart from being a delightful book it has serious investment potential as well.
This is the very first Rupert Bear book to be illustrated by John Harrold who went on to illustrate Rupert Bear for about 30 years; his annuals have a superb standard of draftsmanship, an astonishing simple beauty and an incredible artistic flair.
This cook boo contains 12 simple recipes and each comes with a relevant short story featuring Rupert Bear. The 'Blackberry Apple Crumble' recipe comes with a short story of Rupert and Podgy picking berries from the hedgerows and bushes but also contains a warning from the Wise Old Goat not to eat strange berries. The recipe itself has 11 simple stages and apparently is Mr Bear's favourite pudding! The stuffed baked potatoes recipe comes with a seasonal tale of Christmas carol singing and a mole who was actually using the recipe while Rupert, Algy, Bill and Podgy were singing carols. Mr Bear presumably prefers smoked potatoes as he is smoking his pipe during this story!
Other recipes include gingerbread men,Welsh rarebit,coconut snowballs(superb!)and toad-in-the-hole.
The book comes with illustrated endpapers which show imps of spring watching Rupert and five chums having a picnic which undoubtedly contains at least one of the recipes in the book.
One unusual point is that the 'Super Sandwiches' recipe includes a character called Raggety. Regular readers of Rupert tales will know that Raggety is a tree troll but in this short tale he is a tramp - presumably John Harrold was not given a description of this character before he drew the artwork.
