This review is from: First Thrills (Kindle Edition)
An eclectic mix of stories is delivered in this useful compendium of 'crime thrillers' where established authors rub shoulders with up and coming writers.
They have around 10-15 pages to draw one in, deliver the meat of the story and then the conclusion. But 'twas ever thus for short stories and it does serve to show how complex and enthralling full length novels are in comparison.
The wide range of stories and situations mean the pages turn quickly and with 25 authors to contend with the styles remain fresh. One never knows quite what is coming next as topics move from stings and con tricks to murder and revenge with space ships and gastronomy thrown in for good measure. All manage a twist or two which, given the small amount of space available, is commendable.
I believe that all the authors are North American and so the spelling and vernacular and of course 'state side'. A couple of fun ones by way of example - 'Looking at him, one would not have guessed that he was a very successful engineer, and the owner of twenty patents'. (I am not sure I would know a patent owner if one bit me). And ..'the captain agreed "Thought it was all ball pucky".' Finally 'But don't get the idea that Frank is some kind of sentimental doily muncher'.
Think CSI and The Wire.
My favourites were The Thief by Gregg Hurwitz Both and Last Supper by Rip Gerber - I will be following up on their other work. Both offerings were quirky and arresting. Sorry but I did not really enjoy the offerings from the big hitters - Lee Child and Stephen Coonts.
With this offering only £1 on Kindle you can make you own call though.
This was my first Kindle purchase and I found the format made it easy to dip into so providing me with a useful way to get used to reading in this way.

"I believe that all the authors are North American" - Lee Child is in fact British, but chose to work as an American author.
Nit picking aside - great review!

Thanks Grahame.
Not nit picking at all so no problems. It is the first time I have read any of his work and it had the feel of a N American to it so I made an assumption. I was surprisingly disappointed by his offering - perhaps he is just letting others take centre stage.

If you are going to try Greg Hurwitz, trying 'You're next'. The others are disappointing in my opinion.
