I just don't know where to place McCartney. I think the music he produced in The Beatles was, for the main part, fantastic. But his solo stuff lurches almost unfathomably between genius and lightweight lift music.
In my opinion, I think he often didn't realise what he had, or was possibly a bit laissez-faire. Listening to this collection there are moments of great inspiration and then others that could, with the right direction, have turned into something on the level of Maybe I'm Amazed or perhaps some of the best tracks off Ram, none of which are included here - which adds to my point. (Incidently, this is not a Wings collection anyway, it's a solo/Wings combined album??)
The genius of the Beatles was created by the group's three great songwriters sparking off each other - all three suffered in their solo careers without each other in their lives. McCartney's music suffers because there is no one to stop it sometimes/often falling into twee drabness. Maybe he needed a powerful producer like George Martin around to keep him in line (like Live and Let Die).
I just don't know - you have to admire the man for creating one of the biggest bands of the 1970s, I just wish some of the output was a bit less wishy washy.
