I've been a long time Eels fan, like most bands as time goes on there are always highs and lows with album releases. Getting to 10 albums is rare enough in the music industry and consistency is even rarer.
The last 2 albums for me were just not up there with the previous output. However in this 10th, yes 10th album it really feels like E is reaching the heights again. Tracks like "Kinda Fuzzy" and New Alphabet" sound like the best stuff from the Souljacker/Blinking lights era, while "Accident Prone" and "True Original" hark to the more melancholy sound of Electro-Shock Blues. E's delivery is his usual mix of gruff sadness and hopeful optimism mixing the heartbreaking with the downright foot tapping fun stuff. I could listen to another 10 albums worth of this guy and not get bored.
The 2 disk edition is well worth it for the live performances. Having seen the band in Newcastle this year taking this material and injecting it with big dose of rock and a lot of fun, it was good to hear some of that style on the live "PrizeFighter" track.
Overall I really recommend this album, it's perfect for long time Eels listeners and 1st timers experiencing one of Americas current most prolific and talented singer songwriters
