MAYNARD DELIVERS A KNOCKOUT WITH "DONKEY PUNCH THE NIGHT",
This review is from: Donkey Punch the Night (MP3 Download)
While most Tool fans are at this point craving a new album from the band or at the very least some new material from A Perfect Circle frontman Maynard James Keenan has different ideas and those ideas involve his successful side project Puscifer and their third EP "Donkey Punch The Night". An EP which contains four tracks and four remixes of those same tracks.
Puscifer have always had an more electronic and experimental sound than any of Keenan's other bands and that continues with this EP. The experimenting continues as he does that most difficult thing in that he performs a cover of a Queen song, which in itself is a brave task but it's not just any old Queen song at that, he's only gone for "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the result is quite impressive as he pulls of a heartfelt and faithful version. Puscifer also cover Accepts "Balls to the Wall" to great effect as well as including two original tracks in the electro sounding "Breathe" and "Dear Brother". Once again female vocalists Carina Round and Juliette Commagere both appear on the EP as they did on 2011's album "Conditions Of My Parole". Of all the four tracks that get remixed the standout one is the Denton Reworking of "Dear Brother" which sounds like an 80's electronic track complete with synth vocals. Sonoio (former Nine Inch Nails keyboardist Alessandro Cortini) deliver a remix of "Bohemian Rhapsody"
So while the wait goes on for a new Tool album, with his side project Maynard James Kennan is at least releasing music. Music that gives him more room to experiment with his own ideas.
