This review is from: Jekyll : Complete BBC Series 1 [DVD] (DVD)
The legend of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde has been with us for more than a hundred years. In fact, during the Whitechapel murders, several theorists had suggested a link between the atrocities perpetrated by that man-shaped-fiend whom posterity preferred to know as Jack the Ripper, and the drama that was being enacted at the Lyceum Theatre (none other than R.L. Stevenson's most famous one). But it needed the genius of Steven Moffat to update that legend (something that he perfected in "Sherlock") and bring Jekyll (& Hyde) to the present-day England. The story has been recounted by many, and so I would refrain from repeating the same. My thoughts, after viewing all the episodes of the 1st Series are as under: -
1. James Nesbitt was superb, and the skill that he demonstrated in displaying the vulnerability of Tom and darkness of Hyde is awesome.
2. The story (perhaps deliberately, and trying to be gothic) kept many ends loose, that were supposedly to be tied up in the 2nd Series (that never happened). But now, with so many serials getting their sequels (fans are expecting Sherlock to return this very year for a 3rd series), can't we have a conclusion of the sordid saga of Jekyll-Hyde-Alice and the evil corporation?
3. The minor characters in the series were really good (apart from their acting skills, that is always top-notch in a BBC production), and I would love to see their return.
Overall, if you have already seen this series, you know my feelings. If you are yet to watch this series, you should not delay, and trust me, it would be some ride! Recommended.
