Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)At first it would seem unlikely or even distasteful to make a comedy centred around a young man diagnosed with a cancer, but this film actually works.
The film centres around a young man who lives a healthy lifestyle. He has a pain in his back but discovers to his shock that he has an aggressive form of spinal cancer which (according to his Internet searching) gives him a 50/50 chance of living.
The film is about the impact that this traumatic discovery on his life and relationships, particularly with his attractive girlfriend, his mother, a social worker/therapist and his best friend (played by Seth Rogen, who is basically playing the same role that he usually plays in buddy movies).
There are some genuinely funny moments, many of them delivered by Seth Rogen of course. At the same time, there are some touching moments infused with real emotion that made me well up a little.
I was completely engrossed in the movie and didn't even notice how long it was, which for me is a good sign that it was well-paced, entertaining and not too long.
For me, the film also reminded me that life is short. The reality is that people of all ages do get cancer, do get heart disease, do get killed in unforeseen accidents. This film reminded me that we need to make the most of today because who knows how long any of us have on this planet?
