This review is from: Atavistic Avatar: The Cartoon Brut Art of The Pizz (Paperback)
Multi hued cartoon surreal imagery culled from a retro lala land but fused with an acrylic psychology. This is poignant social critique dressed up as lowbrow. Borrowing ideology from Robert Williams this moves into wife beating, pimping, heroin addiction, lust, gluttony and th vibrancy of the sensations. All the things mother warned me about.
This looks like a coffee table art book but instead unveils a cartoon version of the real world, a technicolour whizz of the detrius and depravity without necessarily showing a pictorial for wound management.
This is an extremely funny book that hits you like a Bill Hicks story, an Otto Dix or early George Grosz painting or a piece of hardcore shattering the pretentions of living in a glass goldfish bowl
This moves way beyond skin art to depict and then reflect a world violently placed in ghettoes.
Beatniks, hillbilly', punk rockers, rockabilly's, sleaze, tease and exotica bounce out in multi splendor. The the detail is fantastique.
The rush of blood is captured in Pizz's finest.
In London the gaze is proferred at myriad pictures of bland defunkt classical patronage art hung in dour main galleries. Alternatively there is self harm reframed as art daubed and splashed in red in the moderne. Stranded are those who want to connect with the real encapsulated here?
