This review is from: The Definitive Eric Coates - all of his commercial recordings 1923-1957 (Audio CD)
The previous reviewers have given musical appreciations of the man and his music. I will add one nostalgic memory of my own. When I was about 9 or 10 my father worked in a hotel in Bognor Regis. One day, I was allowed into the restaurant, where a man sitting at a corner table with a large drink in front of him, writing music. I was an obsessive piano student at the time, so was obviously fascinated by this. Did my father know who he was? "Oh yes", he said. "That's Eric Coates". I didn't dare approach him, as he was obviously concentrating very hard, but my father told me the hotel restaurant was one of the composer's favourite places to sit and work, when there were no meals being served. I didn't realise at the time just how much of the music, familiar to me from the radio, was by this same man. Light it may be, but beautifully-crafted - and still played, which is more than can be said for so many other hard-working composers!
It's a lovely box-set to have and if one doesn't want to play it beginning to end every day, well, so what? Thank you, Nimbus.
