5.0 out of 5 stars STUNNING -- buy immediately. Reference Bluray., 3 April 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The General (1926) [Blu-ray] [Region Free] [US Import] (Blu-ray)
if you know anything, you already know that _The General_, Buster Keaton's great masterpiece, is simply quite possibly the single greatest film ever made, and easily the greatest comedy ever made.

You MUST BUY this Bluray version, it is spectacular. it is actualy mastered from a NEWLY STRUCK PRINT, FROM THE ACTUAL CAMERA NEGATIVE. I'm not kidding.

Let me type that again - they FOUND THE CAMERA NEGATIVE, and they STRUCK A NEW PRINT, so as to MASTER IT FROM THAT PRINT. Right out of the {insert string of astounded vulgar adjectives here} chemical bath. I mean that's unbelievable.

The only thing that could be better than this is if Buster Keaton came back to life and appeared in your living room and went on to become your best friend and roommate.

Additionally the disk is packed with excellent bonus features (such as a nice piece by old Orson Welles, and excellent history about the real "General" steam train).

This is without a shadow of a doubt the greatest and most important movie ever made about trains; easily the most important work of comedy in our entire planetary era; easily the greatest silent film ever made (as a curiosity, it was in fact the most expensive silent film ever made); as Orson Welles points out, as a sort of passing matter, it is far and away the best Civil War movie ever made; and indeed just generally perhaps the greatest, most human, most "real", film ever made.

On top of all that the Bluray is the last word in classic film bluray presentations ---- a miracle. BUY IMMEDIATELY.

On a technical note, there are NO region restrictions, and the seller is shipping same-day. I cannot emphasise enough how good this Bluray is, I'm going to buy more copies just in case the world comes to an end or something. Buy instantly.

You write that it is zone free. Are you sure this US-Bluray is not just for zone A? I read about it in another critic. Thank you for confirming that. I live in Europe, this is thus an important detail for me.

Amazon's own text:
Brand new and sealed!! Please note this is the region free USA edition!! Get it quick!! Get it now !!

To be fair, Amazon also states higher up on the same page: 'Region A/1' - they do this all the time with many BR products. Someone there needs to get hold of of this.

This is, quite possibly the single funniest and greatest review I have ever read.

Oh and I urge you to buy this blu ray. As already mentioned the quality is truly stunning and it seems like it was made yesterday, not yesteryear.

Your enthusiasm is contagious ;) Worth mentioning that recently European Region B edition was released in Spain - hard to say if it's using the same print as Kino but it is looking stunning as well. Contains no extras thou. BUY IMMEDIATELY! :)

Hiya! Sorry for the incredibly late reply. Yes the copy I received was honestly region free -- as you know, this can change with print runs and over the years; it's impossible to be "absolutely certain" you probably agree. (And just as the other Commenters note, any information published on the matter is usually - randomly wrong.) But yeah, it was region free! Cheers!

Thanks for answering me. I had already bought it though. What a masterpiece! I would compare it to the film made in 1923 by Harold Lloyd "Safety Last". Both are just astonishing.

Hey Dam - you know, I've never seen "Safety Last", that is a great tip, thank you so much! I've ordered a copy immediately! Thanks! You know, you may also enjoy the works of Jacques Tati, perhaps you've got them already. Thanks!

Well, I am glad to read that. You won't regret it. Did you purchase the Us Bluray by Criterion? I am a big fan of this video-distribution company. This edition of "safety last!" offers pristine HD. Just incredible!
To Jacques Tati now. He is indeed one of my favorite filmmaker (after Hitchcock). Being French (but living in Berlin/Germany) I got to see his movies from an early age. In France Tati is now a most respected filmmaker. Actually my uncle is one of the movies I prefer, it combines such fine humor with nostalgia.
Another film I cherish particularly is the Night of the hunter by C. Laughton. Why couldn't these artists then succeed in attracting the public and were only estimated long after they disapeared?

Ah .. pardon, mon francais est mauvais. J' un rost-beef (donc ... PASD'anglais .. ecosse! :) ) J' habite a votre pays. I absolutely love Tati, of course. Thank Goodness all the BluRays of his films are excellent productions. (Whole families move to france because of Tati, we worship him outside of France!) For me the only real filmmaking like that today is (strangely enough) Miyazaki's various masterpieces, whisper of the heart, poppy hill, etc. (Incidentally! Both the french and english versions of _poppy hill_ are horrible, i just watch the japanese perhaps with subtitles.) Yes, I got the crit. Bluray for _Safety Last_ - it's coming from the US, thanks again. Night of the hunter, thanks, never heard of it! it's en route, cheers
