Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
As the Nintendo DS is already a big hit in our house with our 6 and 9 year old, I thought this LeapFrog Leapster GS handheld games machine would prove popular with my youngest - and it has. Whether taking photographs, playing with the images (stretching/distorting/drawing and colouring etc.), creating and playing with virtual pets, playing music or games (many of which can be customised/personalised), she has enjoyed hours of playing time with it. There's a very nice blend of learning and fun with the games too. The quality of the graphics are good and the sounds from the console are both clear and engaging.
After initial set-up, three games are instantly playable. There are a huge range of games to download from the LeapFrog site, so we have literally only scratched the surface in terms of software available for the GS, but they do cost a little per game. However, compared to the cost of a new Nintendo game DS, for example, they are currently extremely good value (I'm not going to publish game prices on this review, because they can change at short notice). It requires 4 x AA batteries which, if you use ones of decent quality, last for a few hours' use (rechargeables are obviously recommended) or, alternatively, you can connect it to the mains with a DC adaptor (available to purchase separately). The build quality is good, has an easy touch-screen interface, a nice chunky stylus, seems very durable and has survived a couple of accidental drops well.
The target age for this product is about right (4 to 9 years). Our nine-year old daughter likes it, but it doesn't give her the same kind of enjoyment as it does our youngest. There are "accounts" for three different users, so children with different learning levels can select their name and it's customised for their ability. All-in-all, It has proved to be a big hit. In the words of six-year old Charlie, the Leapster GS is "Awesome! And if you had 150,000 children, you'd want to buy all of them one!" Whilst I'm eternally grateful that I don't have 150,000 children, you have to admire her enthusiasm for the product.
