Really enjoyed this and it's very well written.,
This review is from: The Radleys (Paperback)
Well I don't normally read "horror", but made an exception for this as it was so well reviewed on TV Book Club (Channel 4). I wasn't disappointed.
It's really well written, Matt Haig has some really nice turns of phrase and within a few pages I was hooked and couldn't put it down. It's a proper grown up book about Vampires, and although there are some horror elements (obviously), what it's really about is a family trying their best to live a killing free life and fit unobtrusively into normal society. The whole tale felt less fantastical than average vampire fiction and I liked that a lot.
The story is touching, funny and horrific all in one. The Radleys really feel like anyone else you might meet living in your village although they have a terrible secret.
The whole book takes place in about a week, the main action happening over just one weekend, so it races along and takes you with it with every page turn. Additionally, it's a real treat to read the prose, for once here is a vampire story with quality writing!
