This review is from: The Lieutenant (Kindle Edition)Being a huge fan of Andre Dubus, who died suddenly aged 62 in 1999, I borrowed a kindle to read this as it is only in print in ebook format. The only novel that Dubus published,it first appeared in 1967, fairly early in his career. It clearly draws heavily on his military career and provides insight into the casual violence, tedium and oppressive discipline that was part of the American military machine post-WW2. While worth reading I did not feel it is up there with his later novellas, short stories and essays. He became a much better craftsman and perhaps the novel was never going to be the form in which he excelled. This edition also contains photographs and other material from the Andre Dubus archives, which is a nice bonus.
