Last great series: best RD DVD,
This review is from: Red Dwarf: Series 6 [DVD] (DVD)
In the Red Dwarf canon, series 6 is the last of the four best seasons. Not quite up to series 5, with no Holly and no Red Dwarf(!), the creative writing of Rob Grant and Doug Naylor reached a peak with the cleverness of most of the stories here, especially Legion, about a gestalt entity (this was the first episode which grabbed my attention; I confess I was not interested in the series before 1993). There is also the brilliant Gunmen of the Apocalypse, which won an Emmy.
As for the DVD, once again, there's entertaniing commentaries from the cast and a fans' one for the Gunmen... episode. Craig Charles returns for the cast commentaries (an unfortunate omission from series 5 due to illness). The second disc is even more crammed with extras than its predecessors. I really enjoyed the Return to Laredo feature with Robert Llewellyn, and the background to Howard Goodall's music.
This is the peak of the DVD sets. With the disappointing last two series to come, it's all downhill from here. Any chance of an explanation from Doug Naylor about the split from Rob Grant?
