It starts out good and gets better,
This review is from: Sugar and Spite (Audio CD)
There's no point listing all the musical references present within this glorious album , because there are just too many and in writing they appear such unlikely bedfellows.
America and Muse, anyone? Del Amitri and the Smiths? Al Stewart and Crowded House?
Yet the combination is unique. From banjo to howling guitar to layered harmony.
Best just get hold of a copy and play it.
The musicianship is deceptively understated. The vocals are intense. The songs are crackers, and not just one or two, either, the whole lot.
Like the very best albums it grows and grows the more you play it.
It's without doubt my album of the year so far, and it will take some beating.
So go on, and do as the band say : Put a Record On.
You won't be sorry..............
