This review is from: To lose a battle: France 1940 (Hardcover)
Alistair Horne was pretty much a specialst in recent French history and other books have covered the seige of Paris and the battle of Verdun, but this third volume covers the years between the two world wars - the musical chairs of coalition governments, the geriatric generals, the communal strife in the streets and in government and in particular the ossified defence policies which produced inevitable disaster. Facts and figures are quoted where needed but the human faces of Reynaud and Daladier and others - and their over influential mistresses - are never lost sight of.
