useful introduction for pre-planning trip but lacks overall site plan,
This review is from: Cities of Italy : Pompeii - guide with plan (Paperback)
I bought a used copy of this book expecting a plan of the whole site plan to be included. The book does contain some plans, but they are plans of small specific areas of the site which is not what I was hoping for.
This (slim) book gives you a good succinct commentary of the main 'sights' in Pompeii, but the audio guide that you can hire at Pompeii is of course much more detailed.
Upon arrival in Pompeii you will be given a large (free, well, subject to you paying the entrance fee!) map of the site. Having read this book beforehand, I had an idea of which sights I wanted to see, and so once I was provided with the map I could plan my route round Pompeii. Consequently, the book did have some value. Given the the cost of the book, I would say it's worth it for getting an idea of the main sights if you're looking for an introduction to Pompeii(the official guide book sold in Pompeii is approx 10 euros, but is much more detailed and has better quality photos).
As I struggled to find any other guides to Pompeii before travelling there, I would recommend this as a useful (if not the only available!) introduction, but not if you're hoping for a plan of the site itself.
