3.0 out of 5 stars Deluxe Edition - watch out for the packaging!, 22 Oct. 2013
This review is from: Moondance (Deluxe Edition) (Audio CD)
This refers to the deluxe edition only.
I already have an old half-speed master of this which I love, but had to get this for the bluray.
As expected it sounds great and the surround version opens up the mix nicely, although its not really surround. In fact the engineer says its effectively 8 track mono, but I don't care. There's not much added value to disks 2-4 except "I will sing" which is very interesting, nothing like it elsewhere in Van's discography, and you can see why it was left off Moondance. Also an outtake of "Nobody knows you when you're down and out" and early attempts at "I've been working" which finished up on "His band and the street choir". So far so goodish ..... however the packaging is a disaster. Be very careful when removing all the cellopane/sticky stuff - its very difficult to avoid damaging the contents. Also when I opened up the photo-album style contents it fell apart. Whoever thought double-sided tape would hold it together needs to go back to packaging school. I finished up drilling two holes right through the spine and running a chord through like a ........... photo album!

I would also agree with the packaging falling apart. I also thought it wad a bit unusual, was having the sheet with the disc contents just sellotaped to the back!

Totally agree about the packaging. When I opened the first box set, the inside sleeve section just peeled away from the card covers, so I sent it back only to have another one delivered that's exactly the same. Clearly its a manufacturing issue. Given the price it's not acceptable to be selling something so shoddily packaged. The whole batch should be recalled and replaced once the packaging problem has been sorted. It's hardly rocket science - I have loads of box sets with card sleeve inners - Miles Davis, Grateful Dead to name but a few. This is just ridiculous that Rhino or whoever can't get it right.
