Better than I intially thought,
This review is from: Colloquial Russian: The Complete Course For Beginners (Colloquial Series) (Paperback)
We are going to live in Moscow for 3 years, so I needed to learn some Russian. My wife and I have accumulated a pile of Russian teach-yourself books and I had initially dismissed this one as too hard. I have since come back to it and it has become the mainstay of my studies.
I agree with other reviewers that this is not for the casual user wanting a few words for a two week Russian holiday. This book is clearly designed for people who intend putting in a real effort and getting well beyond 'hello, how are you?'.
I found the grammar concise and well-explained. The introduction of various components of grammar can seem a little haphazard at times, but Russian does have crazy, complex grammar and every book I have seen seems to approach it differently.
Plenty of exercises, some fairly long pieces of Russian text to work through. All good.
There do tend to be vocabulary dumps, and after only a few chapters one is already faced with some quite long pieces of prose. But as I noted earlier, if a short course for a two week holiday is what you need, look elsewhere.
If, on the other hand, you are serious about learning Russian and are willing to put in some effort, in my opinion this is a good text.
