Ever wondered what the result would have been if Black Sabbath and a `Songs In The Wood' era Jethro Tull had listened to Wagner's `Ring Cycle' a few times then gone onto the studio to write and record a few tracks together? Well wonder no more!
A strange mix of Viking warriors, heavy metal rockers and folk singers, Tyr are a group with a sound all of their own. With a basic sound like Black Sabbath at their heaviest, mixed with Nordic folk motifs, and lyrics that tell stories, almost like old fashioned sagas, this is a constantly surprising and engrossing album. The standout track for me is the title track, telling of Eric The Red and the way he saw the world.
With its sweeping themes, tales of heroes, struggles against the unknown the odd mention of elves I love the lyrical, storytelling aspect. The heavy rock sound with its more intricate folky influences are just the icing on the cake.
Some of the songs are in Danish, the group's mother tongue. Don't be put off by this, the booklet contains lyrics to all the tracks, in their original language and with English translation where appropriate, so you can understand everything in the album. Very thoughtful of the producers.
Of interest to anyone who likes classic heavy metal, folk-rock, and Old Norse sagas!
