Thoroughly enjoyed it,
This review is from: S.J. Peploe (Hardcover)
12 years ago, Guy Peploe wrote a book about his grandfather, the well-known Scottish colourist S. J. Peploe. I missed that, so I'm so grateful that this updated second edition is out. Although Guy never knew his grandfather, there is warm familial feeling with details only a family member can provide. There are wonderful early photos of the artist. Guy does an excellent job of charting S. J. Peploe's direction as an artist. I think the man himself captures the essence of his own work when he stated in a letter to his wife in 1903 '...these living things - life caught in the act; intimate, spontaneous.'
This book captures the essence of the man like no other could. It is an intimate and honest account of the artist, his life and work. It covers the breadth of Peploe's work including works from the whole period of production - still life, figurative and landscape. His style is free and uninhibited. It is beautifully produced with excellent illustrations and text. This should be on every art lover's bookshelf. This review first appeared on yarnsandfabrics website.
