A good introduction about a little publicised conflict that could have been a preview of things to come,

This review is from: The Chaco War 193235 (Men-at-Arms) (Paperback)
A de Quesada and P Jowett's brief overview of the war between Bolivia and Paraguay provides details on what, like the Spanish Civil War of 1936~9, can be viewed as a forerunner to World War II.
Both sides in the conflict engaged mercenaries:- British, Chileans, Czechs, French, Germans & Swiss fought for Bolivia; and, Americans, French, Germans, Italians & Russians fought for Paraguay... perhaps a training ground for what was to come in Europe!
The main beneficiaries seem to be those supplying arms to both sides as the oil concessions never really materialised in the arid northwest of Paraguay.
R Bujeiro's illustrations are superb.
Overall well worth the money.
