Bigger, bolder, better, brilliant!,
This review is from: Ratchet & Clank 2: Locked & Loaded (PS2) (Video Game)I am not a huge fan of platform games, but I had a go at the first Ratchet & Clank game and was absolutely hooked, playing it right through to the end. The sequel was a no-brainer, and whilst it is very similar to the first, there are enough improvements and additions to make it a very worthwhile purchase.
The plot is some daft nonsense about a manufactured pet going our of control and Ratchet & Clank being recruited into the Megacorp Commandos to stop the universe being devastated by such a threat. It's silly, but the wry sense of humour of the prequel is back and the game is always putting a smile on your face. Insomniac Games have also expanded on the characters a little, there are lots of good gags, and there are plenty of crazy ads and spoof TV shows to keep you entertained between levels.
The weapon list is much larger and they can now all be upgraded in various ways. Collecting new weapons, armour & accessories and bolts to upgrade them is a must in order to take on the latter stages of the game. There are skill points to be won by completing hidden objectives, and crystals to be gained in a similar way. The levels are beautifully designed and work very well, the game is never unfair, and with enough thought and cunning, you can get through any combat situation.
The graphics are not much of an improvement over the first game, but they are still very good for the now aging PS2. The new rocket-flying sections work pretty well (you have your very own ship which can be upgraded, repainted, redesigned), and the hoverboard games have been replaced by a kind of speeder bike affair, which are generally an improvement, to be honest.
The controls are great, the level of difficulty is just right and the weeks/months you will spend playing through this game are a joy. It's simply one of the best games ever.
