Excellent new album from an underrated band,
This review is from: She Paints Words In Red (Audio CD)
I used to listen to the House of Love a lot when I was a teenager and decided I'd check on their latest album. Verdict?
I love it! It's packed full of enticing melodies, and I think we have here the old Chadwick/Bickers entity at its best.
I see some of the reviews say this album is "mellower" than some of their previous work, and I suppose I have to agree - it's definitely similar in sound and texture to Chadwick's only solo effort some 15 years ago - but still it has the edge that the House of Love always had, and being mellow is not a bad thing per se, in this case it doesn't mean boring, far from it.
Some tracks are incredible, I just can't get them out of my head.
The only "criticim" I can think of is that they chose the wrong song for their single. And also the track that gives its name to the album is arguably the weakest of the lot. But apart from that, it's a really tight, intense, melodic 40 minutes' worth of music.
If only they could get some airplay...
