This review is from: No Helmets Required: The Remarkable Story of the American All Stars (Hardcover)
I have an old Sydney v All Stars programme and often wondered who was behind the tour, how could the Americans put a team out to attempt to compete with international RL players and ultimately why did the game fail to get a hold in the US sports market.
Well all the answers are here in this well researched book with fantastic pictures and documents to supplement what is simply an unbelievable story.
It is gripping particularly in the early stages and frustrating in the end as politics and ego (as usual) mean that this golden opportunity to spread the game of Rugby League into a powerhouse sporting nation disintegrated into dust.
The recent words and pictures of the players who still cherish their experiences are a fitting finale to the book.
It could all have been so different for the USA team taking part in this Autumns RL World Cup - the may have well have been the favourites as opposed to the minnows of the tournament.
