No doubt you are reading this because of the current push to get Altern-8 to the top of the Christmas charts, and rightly so. Aside from the fact that the competition is the usual dross of manufactured nonsense, a song from an advert of all things (what sums up Christmas more than rampant consumerism), a slew of twee kiddie novelty acts, and finally AC-DC (alright you can't knock them, but they are multi millionaires who've already become the stuff of legend, and don't really have much to do with British music anyway), and that Altern-8 are two ordinary blokes from Stafford (a town best known as a railway junction), this track was a rave classic back in 1991, and still manages to pack a real punch, compared to the watered down nature of a lot of contemporary dance music.
Many people dismissed the rave scene as an early 90's fad, but the fact that 22 years on this track is still receiving exposure, shows that this form of music never really died, and is here to stay, and fond memories of rave culture stay with those of us who were there at the time, and has also entered the hearts of newer generations since. Meanwhile Joe McElderry (remember him - he lost the UK top spot to RATM) in 2009 is already long forgotten. Rave culture is as a part of the UK as Punk or Britpop, and we should be proud of it rather than scorn it. Despite owning the single on 12" from when it came out, I have re-purchased the mp3 and the remixes and wish good luck to Altern-8 with their push to the top. Altern-8 themselves aren't signed to any major transatlantic record corporation, rather a Midlands independent record outfit, so the British alternative music scene will profit from this, and there are murmurings of more releases coming out.
Download it, turn it up and enjoy! And if a corporate sponsored song from a marketing man's wet dream hits the top spot, you only have yourselves to blame if you don't!
