This review is from: The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation (LP Gatefold, 180G Vinyl) [VINYL] (Vinyl)
I first heard of Aynsley Dunbar as a drummer with Frank Zappa but never knew much about him, including the existence of the Retaliation albums, but after a quick listen on Spotify, I was sure I'd like them. Bearing in mind I've never heard these four albums before, I've no previous release to compare them to, but what I do know is they sound fantastic! There's very little background noise on the vinyl and and I wouldn't surprised to learn these reissues have an all-analogue provenance with no digital processing whatsoever - I don't know whether that's the case, but the LPs sound far too good to be digital remasters.
The music can be described as bluesyrock and maybe a bit like early Fleetwood Mac. These reissues really capture the essence of the late '60s/ early '70s because the more I listen to them, the more I can feel my facial hair and sideburns grow! If you like early Fleetwood Mac, I'm sure you'll like these albums. What you'll definitely like though, is the quality of the vinyl; it's superb and surprisingly cheap. The vinyl comes in paper sleeves and although I'd prefer anti-static sleeves, I won't knock off a star for that. Right, I'm off to play it again...:)
