A compelling novel,
This review is from: After Such Kindness (Hardcover)Gaynor Arnold's second novel, inspired by the unconventional friendship of Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell, depicts the relationship between a young girl and a middle-aged bachelor in Victorian Oxford.
Through the perceptions of four characters, Gaynor explores issues of innocence and societal convention which will resonate with a modern readership. The characters are vividly drawn, with the eleven-year-old Daisy and her adult self, Margaret, providing an interesting contrast between childhood naivete and adult experience.
Although the novel raises uncomfortable questions, it is a compelling read, building towards an unexpected conclusion.
