Overrated little film,
This review is from: Gomorrah [DVD] 2 disc set (DVD)
I was very hopeful for this film. It often got in the top five of films from 2008 and I regretted missing the cinema release. However, I was distinctly bored sitting through the two hours of this dvd. Only at the end of this two hours do you discern what all the fuss is about... it's based on reality!
Wow! What a novel trick! Basing your story on reality! ... Clearly this is a particularly gruesome and corrupt reality, the reality of Naples, Italy and the way the nasty Camorra mafiosos ruin the lives for the people there.
However, even when graphically portrayed as it is in this film, it's not enough to make a good story. The film has stories layered in the style of great latin american efforts such as Amores Perros, but unlike in the latter, without any effort to interconnect them. The result is a collection of short films layered clumsily on top of each other, with the only connection being the nasty and viscious urban squalor they live in. Again, I think this is fine, and indeed interesting, but to be honest I would have got more from a decent documentary or a good piece of journalism.
This is a tired and overrated little film, which will be thoroughly forgotten ten years hence.
