Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Restrepo [DVD] (DVD)
I purchased this after reading "War" by Sebastian Junger who co-directed this film/Documentary with Tim Hetherington. I was expecting this to be a similar format to most war documentaries, show the soldiers walking about in uniform, interview them a bit etc etc....and it did include things like this, but it also included some of the most extraordinary footage of war ever seen. It shows just how vulnerable the soldiers in the Korengal Valley are, how at any moment they can come underfire. My heartrate increased just sitting watching it, trying to imagine what the people in the film go through...well I can't imagine. The interviews are heartwrenching, listening to fit, strong men talk about friends they've lost, watching them begin to cry, nothing else is that unnerving.
But it is not all sadness, this film tries to underline the reason for everything that happens over there. It also shows the amazing things people will do for their friends. Quite honestly this is a one of a kind film and there is far too much to write in the review because every scene is just as powerful as the one before.
The directors did a fantastic job with this and I know this film will be talked about for years. It's a shame that Tim Hetherington tragically lost his life while reporting in the Libya conflict of 2011, but he has left an amazing piece of filmwork which will undoubtedly go down in history.
As for Sebastian Junger, I thoroughly suggest buying and reading "War" as well as watching this, because it includes much more detail than the film and extra events which could not be filmed. But without the film you cannot truely understand the shock of what these men went through. These two items combined give one of the most realistic and accurate accounts of war ever.
I really suggest you buy this!
