Yee-Ha! I love it,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Rockabilly Cowboy: 250 Original Recordings (Audio CD)
A while back, I bought this and two other boxes, "Rockabilly Rave" and "Rockabilly Dynamite" (both 'reviewed' by me elsewhere). Something of an overdose, and I suffered accordingly. Oddly, this box was probably the most satisfying, being more rootsy, far more rockabilly in content, or should I say countrybilly? You know, a mix of country roots, a dash of r&b, a little hillbilly, some honky tonk...oh, add whatever. If you dig this oftentimes mongrel mix, you'll love this. Not a duff cut to be heard and for me, hooray!, plenty I hadn't heard before. It goes back to the late '40s, with a Hank Williams title, most of the emphasis on mid-'50s material, with a fair few from 1960. Loads of pedal and lap steel, probably some dobro, bags of searing 'lectric, great sawing fiddles, fine drumming, honky tonkin' 88's, bass that's often slapped, impassioned vocals - what could be better? And they were happy enough to use the term 'rock'n'roll' in titles and lyrics by the mid-'50s, in redneck country! Wonder what their audiences made of that?
Regular names here include Tennessee Ernie Ford, Tommy Collins, Rose Maddox, Bob Luman, Marty Robbins, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash, George 'Thumper' Jones, Don Gibson, Pee Wee King, apart from the blindingly obvious, such as Red Foley, Webb Pierce, Hanks Williams and Thompson. Lesser lights - to me - include Burt Kline, Norma Beasler, Joe Hudgins, Don Winters, Sid Silver, Randy Spangler & The Country Cats and plenty more. A well spent voyage of discovery for me, but total lack of liner notes sorely missed (I mean, who were/are some of these dudes?). Sound quality is generally excellent, tho I did pick up a whisper of needle noise here and there when listening through cans. Also, Faron Young's "When It Rains It Pours" ain't there! So, only 249 tracks of the 250 advertised. Should I ask for a refund?
That one blip aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the box, would recommend to anyone who likes this kind of music. Cheapo price may compensate for any cuts you've already got.
