Flies to The Gods,
This review is from: King Lear - BBC Shakespeare Collection [DVD] (DVD)
I dare say that when it comes to filmed productions of King Lear, some would put their money on Scofield, and some would put their money on Olivier. But I would (and have) put my money on Sir Michael Hordern. That sad and worn-looking face - that is the right face for Lear. It is a role that has no need of matinee idol looks, just as it is a play that has no need of a Hollywood budget nor (thankfully) of Hollywood "stars". What King Lear does require are good actors, capable performances and a director with the skill, intelligence and artistry of Jonathan Miller. This production has all of those things.
For the visual style of the piece (by which I mean the lighting and the costumes), it struck me that Miller had taken much from the work of two artists - Velasquez and Caravaggio. They were both good choices.
Beyond the "Subtitles" and "Scene Selection" options, the DVD has no extras.
