To put it short:
This was Capcom's attempt to tackle the particular western rpg genre popularised by Elder Scrolls with their own brand of uniqueness; this, resulted in a sparse meta-narrative on the genre's own coupled with an amazingly fun fighting engine.
Climbing monsters while your Pawns, weird slave AI characters that you create, groom, teach and share with players, spout helpful and not so helpful tips make for chaotic battles where you fight tooth and nail to achieve victory. Those are the sort of battles that Dragon's Dogma excels at, and just when you think the thin bland plot is an afterthought just to have a setting for the battles, that's when the game pulls the rug under you and just drops all it's twists on you. Who needs build-up, tension on their plot? Dragon's Dogma, but even so the end result is surprising to say the least.
