3.0 out of 5 stars Flawless and loveless, no intimacy, 30 Jan 2014
This review is from: Whomp That Sucker (Audio CD)
It's easy to forget that Sparks' hugely influential (and commercially successful) Giorgio Moroder-helmed 'disco' era only consisted of two albums in just over a year. At the start of the '80s, the Mael brothers reverted back to a more rock approach similar to a lot of the popular American new wave music of the time such as DEVO and Oingo Boingo. As Sparks could be credited with inventing the new wave sound with some of their work in the '70s (particularly with the pre-glam LPs), it felt more like the rest of the world was catching up rather than Sparks latching onto a popular style of the time. The move produced some great work and Whomp That Sucker stands up well in their huge discography. The hilarious and clever singles Tips For Teens and Funny Face give the album an amazing opening 1-2 and although nothing else on the album reaches the giddy heights of these first two tracks, it's still a definite improvement on the previous album. The lyrics on this and the next couple of records are a bit sillier than what went before (as if Sparks were trying to appeal to a teenage audience) but that's not really a complaint. Fun with a capital F.
