Dull, over-long and nothing much happens...,
This review is from: Marie Antoinette [DVD] (DVD)
Generally speaking I rather like historical bio-flicks and as a socialist and history-buff I find the French Revolution a very interesting period.
Antoinette is considered by some as cold and callous thanks to her infamous quotation of 'Let them eat cake' and this film sets-out to set the record straight about her true nature. Unfortunately though, I'd say that the reverse of this actually happens here, as from scene to scene all she does is indulge her various whims and become more self-obsessed in her isolated little world.
I had hoped, as the film SLOWLY dragged onwards for what seemed an eternity, that there would be some juicy royal intrigues or the famous "affair of the necklace" scandal. Watching vainly on in hope, there seemed to be the vague promise of some excitement and suspense when those angry peasants finally appear on the scene.
And, just when things begin to get moving and even vaguely interesting the film ends abruptly, with Antoinette fleeing in a carriage leaving an angry mob at the palace gates. Oh dear...
On the plus side though the film looks very nice, the costumes and locations are very good and there's a real feel of authenticity throughout.
Unfortunately I just found the main characters so dull that I found myself wishing for angry peasants to appear and inject the film with a little excitement.
Lets face it, this film is about stupid rich people sitting about wasting time gorging themselves while the very people they're supposed to be leading face starvation and poverty. If anything this film seems to suggest (to me at least) that Antoinette got exactly what she deserved and I'd only recommend this to someone who suffers from insomnia.

You seem to forget the point the film's trying to make - it's a film about a teenager, no different to your daughter, niece, granddaughter, who like most teenagers is self-obssessed and over her head and too much is expected of her.
