This review is from: Fatou (Audio CD)
This debut album is truly delightful. Combining lovely melodies with strong, simple rhythms, delicate guitar-playing and striking vocals, Fatoumata Diawara marks herself out as a rising star of modern Malian singer-songwriters. There are serious messages to a number of her songs (the lyrics are translated in the extensive liner notes), including Bissa (arranged marriage) and Boloko (female circumcision), but there is just as much of the bright & playful side of Fatou on Bakonoba and her ode to love - Kanou. The album has been beautifully produced, as you would expect from World Circuit, and that allows Fatou & her songs to simply shine.

I saw Fatou play live over the summer (at Womad) and already got a copy of her EP there........I've tried to give a flavour of the album in my review, but these days it is extremely easy to find something to listen to from an album before you buy it should you wish to (full length videos on youtube, preview clips of tracks on Amazon & iTunes, streaming of tracks etc). My written characterisation of a particular song might not do it justice.....I'm sorry if you didn't find my review either interesting or helpful.

I heard her play live on 6 Music yesterday - on the radio. I'm about to order this CD immediately. She'll appear on Jools Holland's show, Tuesday 27th Sept so I'm told. Make up your mind then :)

I thought it was a helpful, concise review. You can after all stream a significant portion of each song on this very website. I found your comments regarding lyrical content to be particulary helpful.

mac&cheese, you are right about World Circuit. Their releases are few and far between, but pretty much everything is worth having.
