You don't have to like (or understand) baseball...,
This review is from: Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game (Paperback)... to buy this book. Being English, i don't have a clue about baseball! In fact, we used to call it 'Rounders' at my school.
Anyway, a cracking little read that makes you think that not all is as it seems. Basically, Oaklahoma had no chance - a little team, with a little budget in a game where the rich generally won! How could they compete?
Basically, without spoiling the story, they checked out reams and reams of stats, found out what won baseball games and then signed the players with good stats in the areas they had identified. Everyone else thought home runs won baseball games - Oaklahoma thought differently. Needless to say, the guys they were signing were slow, overweight and cheap - not the stereotypical good looking, strong, athletic type. Teams were happy to get rid of them.
Fast forward a few years, Oaklahoma show an interest in a fat guy - everyone else wants him also.
