This review is from: The Gaol: The Story of Newgate - London's Most Notorious Prison (Paperback)
I was appalled by the quality of prose in this book; in addition, its arguments were muddled, overstated and unconvincing. The author seems much more involved with his own persona than with the terrible history of the building. I bought the book after hearing it read on BBC Radio 4 and my congratulations go to whoever abridged it - they made a slipshod and shoddy piece of academic research sound quite compelling. If the book was an essay, it would earn a grade of C- and I would give the author some extra tuition on planning and structure.
