This review is from: The Complete Guide to Designing and Printing Fabric (Paperback)
I bought this book to get the hang of designing for fabric. I had already borrowed this from the library as well as a friend's copy so I knew it was the one I wanted.
I haven't finished it yet, but it's very informative thus far and takes you from the basic idea and moving forward to actually designing.
It doesn't assume you know anything particularly to start with, but builds quickly and nicely on the basics of different types of patterns and repeats, gets in to colour, sources of inspiration, legality of copyright of image sources, and then moves in to taking those basics and applying them in the computer with easy to follow guides for each type and step. That's about as far as I've gotten, but it goes on to instruct you in actually printing fabric at home with various methods. That looks like fun and I'm looking forward to trying it :D
A friend of mine has a degree in textile design and rates this good as a good primer for getting you started in that direction as it covers all the major basics on the subject.
That was enough recommendation for me :D
