This review is from: The Fatal Shore (Paperback)
I first read this book when I was in Australia years ago and was very impressed with it then. I have since re read it completely and dipped in and out occasionally. My ancestors on both sides of the family have lived in Australia for generations and I bought the book to understand how it may have been for them when they landed (some as felons)in their respective parts of Australia.
This book certainly gave me an insight of how it may have been for my ancestors, but it also captivated me with the inclusion of so much personal information from diaries and letters. It is written in a very readable way which for me is essential as I am not a great fan of reading historical books. The inclusion of many pictures and documents adds to the interest of the book.
My daughter is now visiting Australia and has had this book recommended to her so she asked if I would send my copy over. I didn't want to lose it so have bought her her own copy which is now with her in Aus. This is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the white settlement of Australia whether they have a family connection or not.
